March 31, 2009—The CPSC announced that Yamaha Motor Co has agreed to suspend sales of its Rhino 450, 660 and 700 off-road recreational vehicles.
The vehicles are prone to rollover during normal driving. In fact, the CPSC noted that many of the accidents "involve[d] turns at relatively low speeds and on level terrain.
Yamaha has agreed to modify existing vehicles to install a spacer on the rear wheels and remove a rear anti-sway bar, in an effort to reduce the likelihood of a rollover. Yamaha also will install doors to reduce the risk of crush injuries when rollovers do occur.
Yamaha has not classified these steps as a recall, but rather a "voluntary repair program." Approximately 120,000 Rhino vehicles have been sold in the United States since 2003.
